Information for new members

The renowned local choral group ‘Ladies Who Sing’ started when six ladies, all altos, got together to sing.  A chance meeting with Janet Kelsey, a distinguished choral director and outstanding musician, marked the beginning of a very special working relationship. Soon more and more ladies came along (including sopranos) and the group began to perform challenging repertoire. Now we are in demand as one of the leading chamber choirs in the region and the choir is noted for its committed and polished performances.

We meet on Thursday afternoons from 2.00 to 4.00 in the Methodist Church, White Hart Street, Aylsham. We work hard from 2.00 to 3.30 then have tea and cake together.  Ladies take turns to provide cakes or biscuits, home-made or bought.

Membership of the choir is £20 per month, payable in cash at the start of each month.   We buy music that is in copyright and have a separate music fund.  Members are periodically asked to make a £10 contribution to the fund, when it needs topping up.  We also photocopy music where this is permissible, and borrow copies from the Norfolk Music Lending Library.  A new member will be given a file of music, containing our current repertoire. All music remains the property of the choir.

We give three or four concerts a year and try to cover our costs and make a contribution to our own funds. Normally we would expect to have an audience of over 100 people and hope to sell the majority of tickets in advance. If we are collaborating to fund-raise for another organisation, there is often a retiring collection instead.  As we pay professional fees to our director and accompanists, we have to run a tight ship financially.  Donations, sponsors and fund-raisers are always welcome.

For concerts we wear black trousers, long dresses or long skirts and black long-sleeved tops, with the distinctive ‘Ladies Who Sing’ corsage made for us by one of our members. We have our music in black ring binders.

Our repertoire is varied, covering all centuries and all styles of music.  We sing in two, three or four parts and there are opportunities too for soloists.

Our Musical Director, Janet Kelsey, lives in France and visits us at least once a month.  More frequently just before concerts.  Other practices are taken by our very talented Associate Director, Maggi Warren, who also composes or arranges wonderful pieces for us to sing as part of our repertoire.
